JDM Engines and Motors
The term JDM Japanese domestic market (JDM) is used to describe Japan's economic market for Japanese-brand goods, chiefly automobiles and parts. In recent years, the use and popularity of JDM auto parts has soared significantly especially within the United States and Europe. The probable cause of this is the import tuning wave; which can be attributed to drifting. Drifting is a famous Japanese motorsport phenomenon which is now attracting worldwide attraction and interest. JDM vehicles often differ in features and equipment from vehicles sold elsewhere in other parts of the world. To illustrate, Honda has manufactured various versions of the B18C, B16B and K20A engines for various markets all over the world. Usually, engines used in vehicles outside of Japan have been detuned primarily due to the fact that Japanese Gasoline is of higher octane rating than what is generally available in the USA. In countries where the traffic flows along the right side of the road; the JDM headlamps pose safety hazards because the JDM headlamps are engineered for use on the left side of the road and hence fail to light the right-side of the driver's way while blinding oncoming motorists. Nonetheless; due to the prime feature of rarity of the JDM headlamps, these are quite in demand. There are different standards with safety issues of JDM. Some of the Japanese race models feature less frame support, such as the front cross members or some of the doors, which are designed to save weight in Japan. Some of these differences would keep the vehicles from passing government safety standards in North America.
The primary attraction quotient about JDM parts is that these are rare and are offered on availability basis. Secondly, these parts make a significant statement as compared to the American counterparts. JDM engines are mainly marketed within Japan. Such 4G63-based engines are now routinely imported by some shops as direct replacements for American-spec engines. This is also because JDM engines often come with larger 16G turbos and other enhanced parts and features that are not available in America. However, certain configurations may vary as not all of JDM engines are equipped with advanced or enhanced parts. Therefore it is advisable to thoroughly inspect it and verify the authenticity and proficiency of the JDM engine and thereby ascertain if it is the best option available for you.
"JDM transmission" often refers to the JDM-spec Galant VR-4 transmission that was made available in Japan with a "FWD-to-AWD switch". This transmission comes with extra bolts installed that allow the owner to change from FWD to AWD with a small amount of wrenching. Again the authenticity of the same is subject to close inspection by the buyer. Hence, it is highly recommended to deal with an expert, DSM-centric shop with experience on the JDM components. Although, you will find an astronomical number of dealers out there claiming expertise, credibility and authenticity need to of prime focus when it comes to JDM components.
